Zero-to-One Product Discovery for a Rental Marketplace
Real Estate / PropTechDefining the MVP, feature roadmap and design for a rental auction marketplace built by first-time founders entering the UAE and MENA.

Overview
Three first-time founders wanted to build a rental auction marketplace for the UAE and wider MENA region, with no technology background and no idea what to build first. Canvas Labs Partners ran discovery, defined the MVP and feature roadmap, and worked with a designer to deliver approved mocks for the marketplace, a landlord portal and an admin back end.

Challenge
Three founders had a market insight, no technology background, and no idea how to turn it into a product. UAE rentals ran through brokers whose incentive was commission velocity rather than price: landlords settled for less than market rate, and renters who bid above asking were turned away by brokers holding out for more.
Solution
Canvas Labs Partners opened with competitive analysis, studying Rentberry, the US rental-bidding marketplace, to show the founders a working pattern rather than describe one from scratch. That analysis fed directly into an MVP and feature document defining what the product was, which features made the first release, and the order the rest of the roadmap followed in.
The spec went to finished mocks with a designer, not left as a document for engineers to interpret. Canvas Labs Partners presented the final set to all three founders, took their feedback, and got sign-off before the engagement closed, so the next team inherited something concrete rather than a brief.
Beyond the consumer marketplace, Canvas Labs Partners specced a landlord portal for owners managing multiple listings, and a super admin back end for the founders to run the marketplace themselves, neither of which a first-time founder typically thinks to ask for. Advisory on build sequencing and feature prioritization ran alongside all three deliverables.
Results & benefits
The engagement ended at discovery, and the MVP and feature document shipped to a separate build team. Two years later the live product still runs the mechanic as specified: starting price, starting date, public bidding in place of a broker negotiation. That continuity is the strongest evidence a discovery engagement can produce, since a spec is usually judged on whether anyone still recognizes it after the people who wrote it have moved on. The engagement ran about 130 hours over two months, delivering three specced surfaces: a consumer marketplace, a landlord portal, and an admin back end, all approved before it closed.

About us
Canvas Labs Partners is a software consulting team that designs and ships production agentic AI systems: multi-agent pipelines, tool-calling architectures, and human-governed automation, together with the trading infrastructure, blockchain, mobile, and product engineering those agents plug into. We publish our work as a case ledger rather than a portfolio, so every claim on this site links to the engagement behind it. Engagements follow the same four-step discipline, Map, Bound, Instrument and Govern, whatever the stack, and every entry in the ledger carries a result we are willing to be measured against.
Delivered individually, in a prior role, by one of Canvas Labs Partners’ founding team members. Not by the firm itself.
