Making a Stalled Access Model Buildable

Legal & Professional Services

Turning a stalled build into shippable work by mapping every user journey through a permission model governed by four independent access rules.

Permission-Model Redesign for a Professional Membership Platform

Overview

A professional membership platform for risk-assessment practitioners needed to decide access across four independent dimensions at once, role, subscription, instrument access and verified credentials, and the internal team could not work out how to build it. Canvas Labs Partners was brought in mid-project, with no pitch and no SOW behind the work, and made the permission model buildable.

Challenge

Access on the platform had to be decided by four independent dimensions at once, role, subscription type, instrument access and verified credentials, across several distinct user types, with commerce and approval workflows layered on top. That combination was combinatorially confusing on paper, and the internal team building it could not work out how to turn the rules into something buildable.

Solution

Canvas Labs Partners was brought in mid-project, after the internal team could not turn the access rules into something buildable, with no pitch and no SOW behind the engagement. Rather than a rule table, the fix was concrete journeys: every user pathway mapped, and detailed user stories written for each persona, researchers, practitioners, students, trainers and administrators.

Access was decided by four independent dimensions at once: role, subscription type, instrument access and verified credentials, so the interface had to make that rule set legible rather than let users discover access by hitting walls. Canvas Labs Partners worked from low-fidelity wireframes validating flow through to high-fidelity designs, including access-state indicators showing what a user can and cannot reach.

Canvas Labs Partners managed the project, worked with the engineers, and ran it through delivery and post-delivery testing. The platform launched to positive feedback on organization, navigation and overall experience. The client has also said publicly that the build needed more back-and-forth than expected, consistent with a genuinely harder problem rather than a smooth one.

Results & benefits

The platform launched successfully, with positive feedback on organization, navigation and overall experience, and the permission model that had stalled the internal team shipped as something users could actually navigate. The client has also said, publicly, that the build needed more back-and-forth than expected, and that the more capable system that resulted carries a learning curve. Both things are true at once: a genuinely harder problem than a typical build, delivered by turning a four-dimensional access rule into concrete user journeys rather than left unbuilt, with the friction that came with that difficulty acknowledged rather than hidden.

About us

Canvas Labs Partners is a software consulting team that designs and ships production agentic AI systems: multi-agent pipelines, tool-calling architectures, and human-governed automation, together with the trading infrastructure, blockchain, mobile, and product engineering those agents plug into. We publish our work as a case ledger rather than a portfolio, so every claim on this site links to the engagement behind it. Engagements follow the same four-step discipline, Map, Bound, Instrument and Govern, whatever the stack, and every entry in the ledger carries a result we are willing to be measured against.

Delivered individually, in a prior role, by one of Canvas Labs Partners’ founding team members. Not by the firm itself.
